Safe Routes to School in the Classroom

Activities for Kindergarten through Grade 6

Columbus City Schools and Columbus Public Health have developed a number of programs and curriculum to educate children and their families about the benefits and rewards of physical activity.

One such tool is the "Safe Routes in the Classroom" curriculum.  The curriculum is designed for use by elementary school teachers.  Lessons were selected from the Nebraska Safe Routes to School curriculum based on their innovative, comprehensive and practical approach.

School districts and classroom teachers from across the State of Ohio are encouraged to consult and use the Safe Routes in the Classroom curriculum adopted by Columbus City Schools. (Click on the lessons below to download, print and utilize the lesson plans)

The Safe Routes in the Classroom curriculum corresponds to The National Health Education Standards, particularly Standard 6: Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health enhancing behaviors, avoid or reduce risks and advocate for personal, family, and community health.
