Columbus Public Health – Media Advisory
DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL FOR WEST NILE VIRUS – Weekly Update
FOR FRIDAY, JULY 23

In order to practice disease prevention and control for the West Nile Virus, Columbus Public Health will be spraying neighborhoods in Columbus.  Hot weather means more mosquitoes, and with more mosquitoes comes an increased risk of West Nile Virus. To date, no positive pools of mosquitoes have been detected in the Columbus or Worthington city limits.

WHO: Columbus Public Health – Department of Disease Prevention

WHEN: Monday, July 26, through Wednesday, July 28, between the early morning hours from 4 a.m. – dawn.

WHERE: Weekly online map illustrates the following key areas:

  • Monday, July 26 – South east region
  • Tuesday, July 27 – North east – Easton and The Ohio State Fair Grounds
  • Wednesday July 28 – North east – region

DETAILS: Columbus Public Health practices disease prevention and control by using an Integrated Pest Management methodology.  CPH traps mosquitoes, investigates mosquito complaints and treats standing water to kill larval mosquitoes.  Fogging areas are based on adult mosquito trap results and reports from field staff, the number and type of mosquitoes trapped, and the number of infected mosquitoes.  They are not decided by the number of complaints from any given area. Weekly maps will be posted on the Columbus Public Health Web site at www.publichealth.columbus.gov.
