Central Ohio is getting hit hard by the flu, as is the rest of the country. Boston and New York have declared public health emergencies, and 47 states are reporting wide spread activity, including Ohio. The first pediatric death in Ohio was reported last week in the Cleveland area.

Flu activity usually peaks in February in the United States and can last as late as May.

Flu vaccine is still available in our community.

Anyone can get sick from the flu.

Most vulnerable are the very young, the very old, and those with chronic illnesses.

Increase in Hospitalizations
In Columbus/Franklin County, we have seen a significantly higher number of hospitalizations -- 293 as of January 9, compared to 9 in 2011 and 49 in 2010 for the same period.  

Flu Symptoms
Flu symptoms include a fever, body aches, tiredness, and cough. Although the flu and common cold have similar symptoms, the flu tends to be more severe. Cold vs. Flu

Key steps to prevent getting and spreading the flu:

1. Get your flu shot every year.
2. Wash your hands.
3. Cover your cough.
4. Stay home when sick.
