Description

Enforcement of Ohio's New Texting Law Starts March 1, 2013

The law has been in effect since August 31, 2012 with warnings being given for violations. As of March 1st, fines for violations begin.

Under 18

Under the age of 18, it's illegal to use any mobile communications device while driving in Ohio.  This means no texting, e-mailing, cell phone, video games, iPad/tablet or handheld GPS use while driving, even when sitting at a light or in a traffic jam.  It is a primary offence, which means the police can pull you over for this only.

1st violation: $150 fine and driver license suspended for 60 days
2nd violation: $300 fine and license suspended for one year.
Exceptions:  Pre-programmed GPS or emergency calls to police, ambulance, fire dept., etc.

Adults

Adult Drivers face a $150 fine for texting or reading/sending e-mails while driving.
