The traditional eye cosmetic known as kohl, also called kajal, al-kahl, or surma, is a dangerous source of lead poisoning for both adults and children. Kohl is used in some parts of the world to enhance the appearance of the eyes, but it is unapproved for cosmetic use in the United States.
Kohl consists of salts of heavy metals, such as antimony and lead. Lead is highly toxic, can damage nearly every system in the human body, and is particularly dangerous to children 6 years old and younger.
