Kohl Eye Cosmetic Dangerous Source of Lead

Consumer Alert -- 2. 28.2013 Hisami Surma Kohl Eyeliner Suspected in Poisoning

About Kohl

The traditional eye cosmetic known as kohl, also called kajal, al-kahl, or surma, is a dangerous source of lead poisoning for both adults and children. Kohl is used in some parts of the world to enhance the appearance of the eyes, but it is unapproved for cosmetic use in the United States.

Kohl consists of salts of heavy metals, such as antimony and lead. Lead is highly toxic, can damage nearly every system in the human body, and is particularly dangerous to children 6 years old and younger.

CPH Lead Program

Columbus Public Health works to prevent and identify lead poisoning through childhood lead testing and medical follow-up services, and interventions to eliminate lead exposure.
