Shigellosis is an infection of the intestines caused by bacteria called Shigella. The bacteria leaves the body in the stool (poop) of an infected person. If a person has not washed his/her hands well after going to the bathroom or changing diapers, then their hands can be contaminated and the infection spread to others.
Columbus is having a community-wide outbreak. Recent outbreaks have shown that it can be passed easily among young children, so hand-washing and careful diaper changing are key to preventing new infections.
