Program Information

Heart disease (cardiovascular disease) is the leading cause of death for Columbus residents. The Cardiovascular Health Program (CVH) promotes heart health by working with Boy plays basketballcommunities to help people be more physical active, eat healthy, and stop using tobacco in order to help prevent heart disease.

The Cardiovascular Health Program:

  • Helps communities to create a plan to stop heart disease in their neighborhoods.
  • Works with community groups, schools and worksites to create more local programs and resources for heart health.
  • Helps community groups, schools, and worksites to develop their own heart health programs with activity ideas, funding ideas, and links to local resources.
  • Helps to make policies and other changes that support healthy food and vending choices, smoke-free spaces, and being more physically active.
  • Trains educators to provide programs in their own schools and communities.
  • Provides a web-based newsletter for educators on health and nutrition topics.
  • Provides public information and educational materials on heart health.
  • Provides information on local quit smoking programs, weight management programs, and physical activity resources.

Tobacco Prevention

One component of the work done by CVH is tobacco prevention.  Tobacco use is currently the number one cause of preventable death in this country. For every eight smokers who die, one nonsmoker will also die from breathing in secondhand smoke. Columbus Public Health supports smoke free environments and is committed to helping residents to stop smoking, as well as living, working and playing in smoke free spaces.  CVH works with community groups, schools and worksites to increase awareness, programs and resources aimed at stopping tobacco use in Columbus.  To do this, CVH provides:

  • Tobacco use prevention program ideas for schools and communities
  • Tobacco Cessation program planning for worksites
  • Funding ideas
  • Links to other interested groups and local resources
  • Referrals to Quit smoking programs
  • Information for Franklin County Tobacco use prevention materials available
  • Tobacco display materials for schools (loaned)
  • Links to curriculums and teaching resources
