Teaching HandwashingPrevent Illnesses Spread by Diarrhea

Diarrhea can spread illnesses like Shigellosis.  Shigellosis is an infection of the intestines caused by bacteria called Shigella. If the infected person has not washed his/her hands well after going to the bathroom or changing diapers, then their hands can be contaminated and the infection can spread to others. Recent outbreaks have shown that it can be passed easily among young children, so hand-washing and staying home when ill are key to preventing new infections.

Video - Shigella: Know it. Stop it. Prevent it.

Dr. Mysheika Williams Roberts, Assistant Health Commissioner and Medical Director at Columbus Public Health, along with Shannon Yang, public health nurse, discuss the illness caused by Shigella. Columbus, Ohio. View at https://vimeo.com/52695668.
